What to expect during a consultation
|
"Every child is unique - I consider
the Whole child during my examination and treatment." |
During the first consultation, I conduct a case history, a physical examination and usually begin treatment (if appropriate).
First, I will discuss your pregnancy and childbirth with you, to help me better understand why your child may be experiencing a problem. Then, with you next to me, I will carry out a gentle physical examination of your child, checking things like jaw tension, neck & shoulder mobility, hip & pelvis, and primitive reflexes. I will explain my findings to you and describe how I think I can help. |
It is necessary, during the initial examination, that parents undress their baby down to their nappy to allow me to conduct a good quality infant screening exam. Older children may be required to remove clothing from area(s) requiring examination & treatment.
Please be assured that I respect the dignity of all patients - children can either wear their clothes or I will cover them with a blanket during treatment. Parent(s) are encouraged to stay close during examination & treatment so that you and your child can feel comfortable & reassured.
As well as my osteopathic examination, I screen for infant clinical conditions and will advise if I think you need to see your Health Visitor, GP or a Paediatrician.
I will gently work to remove any strain pattern in your childs body (incl. head & neck) which could be causing / contributing to the problem your child is having. Treatment usually comprises soft tissue work (massage), gentle articulation (movements), and cranial osteopathy while the child is engaged in quiet play, or being read to. If your child or baby has a favourite toy, or book, bringing it to the appointment may help keep them entertained.
Parents are usually surprised by how relaxed their child is throughout the whole process.
(Most children are sleepy after their treatment and often sleep a bit better that night.)
In addition to hands-on treatment, I offer advice on nutrition, posture, home management, and exercises /stretches to aid recovery, promote health and prevent recurrence of symptoms. I also offer periodic check-ups and "maintenance" treatments where required.
You can feed or change your baby if you wish during the appointment. (I often treat infants whilst they are feeding.)
The number of treatments required will vary from child to child and, whilst I am unable to guarantee a result, benefits are usually reported by parents within the first couple of sessions.
